Field Recording #5: Bus Arriving and Airplane Taking Off
For my fifth recording which happened on Sunday, September 28th, at around 3:00 p.m. I happened to walk by a bus stop on Bradford Avenue, where I decided to stop and capture the sound of the city bus just arriving. But I noticed in my recording that just before the bus arrived, the sound of a plane can faintly be heard taking off overhead. I realized that the bus is the second but more abrupt noise recorded, and then the sound of the plane can be heard again as it ascends into the sky above me. The bus made a loud "wheering" noise as it pulled up to the bus stop and the plane made a muffled "fffppsshh" taking off type of noise. Play Sound Here
Field Recording #4: The Manhole
My fourth field recording took place on Sunday, September 28th around 2:52 p.m. I noticed a manhole cover that was slightly ajar on Bradford Avenue, towards the side of the street and decided to hold my mics about two inches above it, while I carefully picked up the cover and let it drop back down. I did this about four times as you will hear, and I thought that it made a very deep "thud" type of sound. I also noticed that the sound resonated for a little while after I dropped the cover each time, because it bounced up and down a few times after the first large "thud" noise . Play Sound Here
Field Recording #3: The Fountain
My third recording took place on Sunday, September 28th around 2:36 p.m. As I was walking on Prospect Avenue, I noticed this fountain leading to the entrance of an apartment complex and decided to it would be a unique and pleasant sound to capture. I decided to hold my mics about a foot away from the spurting fountain in order to get the fullest and richest sound possible without tampering my equipment. The water that was being shot into the air made a very soothing "kur-plunk" type of noise when it came back down and hit the still water. Play Sound Here
Field Recording #2: The Sewer
This field recording took place on Sunday, September 28th around 2:18 p.m. On Frederick Avenue, I noticed this sewer with spaces just large enough to lower my mics down into it. When I did, I heard a deep, echoing "swooshing" noise that was due in part because it was a very windy day. This was probably my most interesting sound in my opinion. Also towards the beginning to middle of the recording I crumpled up a Chewy Bar wrapper that I had, which gave off an interesting sound inside the sewer. Play Sound Here
Field Recording #1: The Jewish Senior Residence Home
My first field recording took place on Sunday, September 28th at 2:00 p.m., across the street from my apartment on Bartlett Avenue, where there is a large Jewish Senior Residence Home. I noticed not long after I moved into my apartment that all of the residents in this home speak only, what sounds like, either Russian or German. As I was beginning my Drift I picked up bits and pieces of a conversation that two or three of the residents were having. Towards the end you can also hear a truck or SUV drive by on the street. For this recording I had my recorder in my pocket and my mics hanging just outside of my backpack. Play Sound Here
Drift 1 Strategy
For Drift 1, my strategy was simply, I choose to use a specific algorithmic strategy that I came up with:
*Walk 1 block then take a right,
*Walk 2 blocks then take a left,
*Walk 3 blocks then take a right,
*Walk 4 blocks then take a left, and lastly
*Walk 5 more blocks
I started out walking on Bartlett Avenue for half a block just to get a feel for where I was, then took a right on Linnwood Avenue and walked about three blocks the last of which I officially started my Drift strategy. After I walked a block on Linnwood Avenue, I took a right on Frederick Avenue. I continued to walk on Frederick for two blocks, and then took a left on Newberry Boulevard. I then walked along Newberry for three blocks and took a right on Prospect Avenue. From there, I walked four blocks and took a right on Bradford Avenue. Once I was on Bradford, i walked five blocks until I reached Wahl Avenue and this was my endpoint.
